So, in the above-mentioned table there is a clear comparison shown between Science and Commerce students in terms of the marks obtained for their academic performance during the IIM selection process. As seen, Commerce students are awarded slightly higher points for relatively lower percentages compared to science students. This is done to promote academic diversity, often benefiting non-engineering (including Commerce) backgrounds.
“Non-engineering students get a bit of an advantage here, since an 80%tile score for engineers is considered equivalent to 75% for commerce students — which is actually quite favourable for those from a commerce background.”
Basically, there’s a small difference between engineering and non-engineering marks. If you have around 75–76%, it’s almost the same as an engineering student having 85–89%. So, you don’t need to get stressed—board marks matter a little, but they don’t make a big difference in the long run. Overall, you’re in a pretty good position.
Selection process at IIMs
The selection process at IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management) is multi-step and slightly different for each IIM, but the overall pattern is similar. Here’s a clear breakdown:
1. CAT Exam (Common Admission Test)
First step is to appear for CAT, conducted once in a year.
It tests you on Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning.
Your overall percentile and sectional cutoffs matter.
2. Shortlisting for WAT/PI
Based on your CAT score, IIMs prepare a shortlist for the next stage.
Along with CAT, they also consider:
10th, 12th, and Graduation marks
Work experience (for some IIMs)
Diversity factors (gender, academic background, non-engineers often get extra weightage).
3. WAT (Written Ability Test) or AWT
A short essay-type writing test on current affairs, abstract topics, or case-based situations.
Some IIMs have replaced it with online writing ability or case writing.
4. PI (Personal Interview)
One-on-one or panel interview.
Questions may cover:
Academics
Work experience (if any)
General knowledge & current affairs
Personal goals, “Why MBA?” etc.
5. Final Selection (Composite Score): Each IIM assigns weightage to different factors, for example:
CAT percentile: ~25–40%
PI: ~30–50%
WAT/AWT: ~10–15%
Academics (10th/12th/Graduation): ~10–15%
Work Experience / Diversity: ~5–10%
The exact formula differs by institute.
